First Presbyterian Church Marriage Retreat
We are so excited to offer a retreat focused on building strong relationships based on John Gottman’s Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.  People travel all over the country for these seminars and we get to offer one right here in Grand Haven!

About John Gottman and His Research…….

The Seven Principles Workshop for couples is a two-day marriage workshop based on the internationally acclaimed research of Dr. John Gottman. This educational workshop has strengthened the relationships of tens of thousands of couples. It’s specifically designed to help couples improve their friendship and learn powerful communication and conflict management skills. We are offering this workshop in a retreat setting.

Retreat Goals

The retreat goals are twofold:

1) To strengthen your relationship in a variety of ways including:

    • deepening your love maps
    • fostering fondness and admiration
    • facilitating turning towards each other
    • accepting influence, solving solvable problems
    • overcoming gridlock
    • creating shared meaning and
    • maintain your gains…………

2) To foster community support for relationships and grow together in this journey of marriage.

Seven Principals Program Description

The retreat will provide a safe space for couples to explore new concepts for enhancing their relationships. The program includes lectures and private couple exercises. Participants will not be required to share their personal problems in front of others.

The weekend will cover…….

    • The research foundation of the program
    • Proven tools to help couples
    • Ways to improve friendship, fondness and admiration
    • How to grow romance and intimacy
    • Constructive conflict management
    • Skills needed to address perpetual and solvable problems
    • Creating a shared sense of meaning

Who The Retreat Is For and Not For?

Couples often wait an average of six years from the time they identify problems in their relationship until they seek help. By then problems deepen, opposing positions become more entrenched, feelings become deeply hurt and the task of recovery is much greater.

Appropriate For Couples: ~contemplating engagement ~ pre-marital ~ couples married for decades

Not Appropriate For Couples: ~ severe relationship distress ~ significant emotional or physical abuse ~ serious emotional or mental health problems ~ relationships where one or both partners are actively addicted to drugs or alcohol ~ and relationships with serious compulsive behavior
